Description
Bubble Dance BW. A Little Egret fishing for food. Shot on E6. (Slide film).
I would come home from foreign war zone assignments for the Associated Press or the BBC or whomever - and my headspace would be a little dodgy.
I'd switch from television (work) to photography (play) and seek out shots like these on the lake where I lived.
I'd be shooting on Nikons with a 500mm or an 80-400mm lens.
I had a Canadian canoe with an electric motor and I'd spend hours on end in solitude with nature's silence. Eventually my head would repair itself. Nature is incredible like that.
I am still completely addicted to shooting... but in those days (this image shot in 2002), digital did not exist and shooting waterbirds like this could be a difficult and sometimes costly exercise.
One whole winter was spent with a flock of these Little Egrets. They move incredibly quickly and you have to be fast and committed to end up with any decent frames.
Most of the time you'd have to be a bit ahead of their movements and crank the motor drive. I think the focus necessary to crack a decent frame contributed substantially to my brain repair.
Then I'd head off to an Afghanistan or a Somalia or a Sierra Leone - and come home to repeat the process.
After 20 years of conflict (1993 in South Africa is where it started - to 2012 Libya, my last war) I went through this 'brain burn brain repair' process many many times. Likely there is residue in my head as well as my heart. But I am here. Many who I worked with over the years, are not.
I have shifted the focus of my lenses to conservation, wildlife and anti-poaching. For the most part a safer existence, although sometimes... well I'll leave it there.
Show love people. To yourselves, to each other and to our Earth.
